My journey to learn about person-centered care

My hope for this blog is to share with my journey as I dive deep into my exploration of person-centered care, which has become my passion. I assume multiple roles in this exploration…the PhD student, whose research is built on the concept; the clinician, whose struggles and triumphs in the clinic are marvellous opportunities for reflexivity; the educator who is in search of how to bridge the gap between research on the topic and its practice in the clinic.

In this blog I will explore all sorts of things about the construct…research articles, concepts, philosophies, ethics, clinical and educational issues, organisational challenges, and mull over my own experiences and challenges as a clinician and educator, and even as a patient whenever I may visit  physician (which I hope I don’t have to do often!!). My intention is to learn through exploration and writing. It is a blog for all healthcare providers, healthcare managers and educators, researchers…and maybe even patients. I hope that you will come along for the ride, and find that as you journey with me, we become more humanised, reflexive and person-centered, achieving better outcomes with our patients.

I welcome all feedback.

What does it mean to treat a patient as a person? To answer this question, I think we need to get a bit philosophical, so please bear with me! The discussion of this domain will be a 2-part blog. In this first part, I will explore 2 theoretical approaches that can help us to understand what it means to treat the patient-as-person.
